Computer Class Room Usage

Hello All,

Mr. Nick kindly requested that when we use a room for a computer class that we put the room back in the exact order in which we found it. The setup of the room is done for the events ahead of time and if we change the setup of the room then the events that follow our classes will not have the setup that they requested. If you absolutely must change the room around you must put everything back they way it was.

Thanks,
James

DOOR COUNT

Sunday, July 19th is the start of another Door Count week, which will end on Saturday, July 26th.

The purpose of Door Count is to track the numbers of visitors who come to the library on an hourly basis. This helps managers make decisions about staffing levels and service hours. It also helps us to gain insight into how people are using the library (i.e. through In House Material Use). These are standard industry measures that all libraries record.

Please check your gates to make sure that they are operating correctly. If you have not already done so, this week would be a good time to clean your filter and make sure that your gate is in working order. You can refer to the exciting gate maintenance video if you need a refresher: https://hplnet.hpl.lib.tx.us/your-library.html

As a reminder, Door Count ONLY involves recording P numbers from your gate(s) on an hourly basis and recording your In-House materials use on an hourly basis. Record other statistics (such as Reference) as you normally do.

Anyone remember the password for the children's computers to get into the options to raise or lower the volume?

Password Change to docs on Google?

It would appear somebody changed the password to access Program Statistics. I haven't checked the other links, but our old password doesn't give us permission to see the spreadsheet.

Google-docs passwords appears to still work (access to the other documents), but Program Statistics won't open with it.

Anyone change anything?

Citizenship Class Question

One of our students pointed out a discrepancy between our handout question #50 (Name two rights only for US citizens"

Our handout answers include: 1) Apply for a federal job, 2) vote, 3) run for office, and 4) carry a US passport.

This differs from the "Learn About the United States Quick Civics Lessons" booklet she got from the USCIS office...for that particular question, the answers in the book were 1) Vote in a federal election, and 2)run for federal office.

I will ask Benito about the correct answer.

Also, on our handouts, in the answer section to question #36, the answers do not include "Vice President", although it is in the booklet and on our presentation slide.

July Temporary Statistics Workbook

From Ann Otto:

Please record your July statistics in this workbook while we finish preparing your FY10 statistical workbooks with the full FY09 numbers added to them.

A few things to do before you start:

1. Add the name of your library in the yellow box on the report page.

2. Please note the new categories of Visitors, Volunteers and Holds (pulled and processed). Hopefully having ALL your stats in a single workbook will be helpful! If you have questions about how to count Holds, please contact your District Manager. Questions about Visitors or Volunteers can be sent to me.

3. At the end of the month, transfer your July numbers from your temporary stat workbook to the July page of the FY10 Stat workbook. (More on this later in the month.) Once you have transferred this information, you may discard your temporary stat workbook.

Shredder

Please don't feed old powercards to the shredder. It got constipated for it, but it's feeling much better now.

Patron Accused of Viewing Porn in the Library

Today (Thursday) a patron brought it to our attention that another patron who was viewing pornography on a public computer earlier this week (Monday).

The patron who complained said he did not say anything on Monday because he just wanted to get out of the library with his children. Today, he canceled his computer reservation because he would be seated next to the same young man viewing porn.

The accusing patron did not want any problems, nor did he want it known that he was the one who complained, but he did want some resolution.

How would you resolve this matter?

We all need to be aware and be prepared to handle such matters according to HPL Policy.

Here is the link to the HPL POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
and the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA )

Please review the policy and post your comments below:

Blazing Time @ Discovery Green

Hello Everyone

Today we had our Storytime event at HPL DG and It was really great and all the children and parents enjoyed the fingerplays and stories that was read today. After storytime, we gave them all a Fire Fighter Craft for them to take home and to make thier own Fire Fighter hats. We even asked the Houston Fire Department to come down to Discovery Green. They brought a fire truck, and also let the kids to cool off by shooting out water from the fire truck.

It was a great event and something new for the park and the library to have.

We still have lots of handouts for the event so if any of you want to duplicate this and do this at your library, please let us know
