Going Away Party!
As you may know, Thuy is leaving us for Central. As a result, we've decided to throw her a rockin' goodbye party! Join us next Friday after work at the Pappas BBQ off 59 near Southwest. (Don't worry, they have baked potatoes and stuff, too.)
Please let us know by Wednesday if you're coming, so we can get an accurate head count, and if you're at Frank or DG, pass the word along and post this on your blog!

Volunteers at SW
We are currently maxed out on the number of volunteers that we can take here at Southwest. Please DO NOT tell anybody that asks about volunteering opportunities that they can volunteer here. We should have some more opportunities available in July once some of the current volunteers finish their hours.
Also, the Summer Youth Enrichment Program Interns are going to be helping out at the front desk per Edward's instructions. They are to be assigned to the shelf-check machine. Any and all checkouts are to be sent to the shelf-check machine where the S.Y.E.P. Interns will complete the checkout procedure. If there are any dvds/cds to be checked out, they will be checked out first at the self-check machine and then brought to the desk to be filled. When the interns are assigned to the desk they are to be supervised by whichever staff member(s) is/are at the desk. The interns are here to assist us with everything except MilCirc. That means the staff memebers should be concerned with only things that involve MilCirc (new record creation, checking in books, looking up numbers, etc.). This means that the majority of shelving, shelf-reading, shelf-cleaning, etc. is to be done by the interns.
Finally, the intern's schedule will be merged into the main schedule used by the Southwest staff, this will allow you to see which intern is assigned where. If you notice that they are not where they need to be please let me know and I will correct the problem as soon as possible.
Thank you all for your help with this.
James

MISSION POSSIBLE
This sunday @ HPL Discovery Green, We are having an event called "Mission Possible" where kids in teams must view nature plants and wildlife and much more.
This sunday we are having kids of finding birds and doing at least 3 objectives for them
The first objective is that a child must find a actual bird then draw and describe what the bird does.
The second objective is that the children must go to the playground where there are metallic birds all over the playground set and count them all.
The third objective is that the children will have to do a word puzzle and once they have found all the words, they must use the unused letters and reveal the secret message.
If there is anyone that needs to make up their hours, or would like to come to and participate, please feel free to come on Sunday @ HPL Discovery Green.
The event starts by noon and ends at 4:00 P.M.
Call us for more information
Thanks

Summer Reading Program Prize Distribution
The Summer Reading Program is in full swing and the patrons are beginning to bring in their reading logs in hopes of receiving some awesome incentives. But how do they receive them? Well I'm glad you asked. The following steps should be taken to distribute prizes:
1. Verify that the patron has registered online for the Summer Reading Program, the registration page can be found here. If they have already then proceed to step 2.
2. Ask the patron if he/she has logged their total number of hours read or books read in their online reading log and that they have filled out their logbook with the correct personal information. If they have then proceed to step 3, if they have not then do the following: Have them log in to their account and input the information needed before proceeding to step 3.
3. Once you have verified the total number of hours/books read begin to distribute the prizes according to the following list:
5 books/hours
- SRP certificate
- Chance to win a book gift set, craft set, or puppet in the weekly random drawing
10 books/hours
- Whataburger certificate redeemable for a Justaburger*
- James Coney Island coupon for a regular or cheese Coney*
- Chance to win a book gift set, craft set, or puppet in the weekly random drawing
20 books/hours
- Downtown Aquarium all day adventure pass**
- Houston Astros ticket coupon for Students grades K - 12 (Set game days as determined by the Houston Astros)**
- Ticket voucher to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus**
- Chance to win a book gift set, craft set, or puppet in the weekly random drawing.
4. Once the prizes have been distributed the participant have to sign a form indicating that they have received their prizes. The form is located on a clipboard which can be found at the front desk. Please record the number on the Circus ticket issued to the participant on the form, we are supposed to try to regulate the prize distribution a little closer this year. Once this is done please move on to step 5.
5. Please keep the reading log from the participant, they have to turn it in to the staff in order to receive their prizes, DO NOT give it back to them. Record the number from the form in the first column on the book to make it easier to keep track of which booklet belongs to which participant. The reading log should be turned in to Dionne.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask Dionne.
Thanks,
James
Distribution of More Hand Sanitizer
FYI,
From Wendy:
Thanks to our FIDS Department, many of you who are responsible for public service areas will be receiving a large container of hand sanitizer on Monday, June 8. While the previous distribution was for staff use, this one is intended for public use as well. Please put it in a monitored location, such as a customer service desk or reference desk, but in a location where the public will understand they can use it as well.

Shelving Handout for Volunteers
I made a handout to give to our volunteers explaining how to shelve. Hopefully it will cut down on misfilings and so forth as we go through the summer.
Shelving Handout
Thursday, June 4, 2009
Let's test the volunteers before allowing them to shelve books
It would appear some of the volunteers were just grabbing books and sticking them wherever there was room, whether or not the books belonged there. The cart is again overloaded.
Please send volunteers to me for shelf testing before allowing them to put ANY books up, please.
On a side note, please do NOT remove the book ends in the JUV NON-FICTION section. The books are separated into neat blocks of books, and it's impossible to keep them standing if people keep removing them when it gets a little tight. If it gets tight in a shelving area, look for out-of-place books, as this is usually the culprit.
Thanks,
Eric
