Cigna Sunday Streets is Coming to Our Neighborhood Nov. 5!

Cigna Sunday Streets Kicks Off on Washington Ave.
The fall series of Cigna Sunday Streets returns this Sunday, October 1, 2017. Cigna Sunday Streets, a project of the Mayor's Office of Special Events and the Health and Human Services Department, provides a family-friendly opportunity to be physically active. For four hours one Sunday a month during the fall months, selected Houston streets are closed to motorized traffic, allowing Houstonians to cycle, walk, run, dance, and socialize in the street. Stores and restaurants along the routes will be open for business.
Cigna Sunday Streets will be in the following neighborhoods:
- October 1: Washington Avenue -- Heights Blvd. to Westcott
- November 5: Gulfton (Bellaire Blvd.) -- Hillcroft to Chimney Rock
- December 3: Energy Corridor -- Briar Forest to Enclave Pkwy
All events during the fall season will take place from 12 - 4pm. Cigna Sunday Streets is modeled after other events around the world. The concept originated 30 years ago in Bogota, Colombia. U.S. cities with similar events include San Francisco, Portland, St. Louis, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Minneapolis.

Kashmere Mini-Branch Opening

I have exciting news to share which will bring back library services to the Kashmere-Gardens Neighborhood Library service area.
The Houston Public Library is partnering with the Health Department to create a mini-library at the Kashmere Multi-Service Center. It will open Monday, October 2, 2017. Services will include checking materials in and out, picking up Holds, basic computer classes that support FEMA assistance, Open Job Labs with Job Readiness, Very Ready Reading program, storytimes, after-school activities and access to online learning resources, such as Brainfuse. The Kashmere Gardens/Lakewood Library team will also be participating in various community outreach events sponsored by the Health Department on Saturdays as well.
The mini-library will be located at:

The Hours of Service, effective Monday, October 2, 2017 will be:
Mon | Wed | Thurs: 10 AM - 6 PM
Tues: 11 AM – 7 PM
Fri: 10 AM – 5 PM
Telephone: 832.393.2450 (The public telephone line for the Kashmere-Gardens Neighborhood Library is being transferred to Room 192 in the Kashmere Multi-Service Center.)
Please help refer customers to this temporary location.
Stay tuned next week for more information about bringing back library services to the Lakewood Neighborhood Library service area. Plans are almost final there. After that we are hoping to finalize plans for Kendall, McGovern-Stella Link, and Meyer service areas as soon as possible.

Hotspot Reminder

This is a reminder about hotspot checkout procedure: Show customer the hotspot device, charger cable, adaptor, SIM card and case to remind that all of these items must be returned in the same condition.
Many devices are being returned in damaged condition and it takes a long time to replace them which causes delays in fulfilling holds.
Please share this information with your staff. I have also added it to the Hotspot Checklist document. Let me know if you have any questions.
Parking Problems at SWMSC

The SWMSC is one the 3 locations in Harris County opens daily ( Sept 22 to Oct 5) from 8 am to 7 pm for the Texas D-SNAP [Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] applications.
Both parking entrances on Sands Point and High Star guarded by the State Troopers, due to the heavy traffic in the area. It becomes very critical to find a parking space on the streets during the day.
When you arrive at work, you will need to show your HPL badge, and tell the officers that you work at the library, so you can park inside the parking lot, if there are spaces.

Voter Registration in Texas Public Libraries

Today is National Voter Registration Day! Many Texas public libraries recently received the following notice from the Secretary of State’s Office Elections Division:
Chapter 20 of the Texas Election Code designates various state agencies, including public libraries, as voter registration agencies. Specifically, Section 20.002(c) provides the following:
(c) Each public library, including any branch or other service outlet, is designated as a voter registration agency. In this chapter, “public library” means a library that:
- is regularly open for business for more than 30 hours a week;
- is operated by a single public agency or board;
- is open without charge to all persons under identical conditions; and
- receives its financial support wholly or partly from public funds.
If your library meets the above definition, then you are a designated voter registration agency and must provide to each person of voting age who applies in person for an original or renewal of a library card an opportunity to complete a voter registration application form, and may also be required to take various steps to ensure proper completion of the form by the applicant and submission of the form to the local voter registrar or to the SOS.
In order to facilitate this process, we have created a PowerPoint presentation, entitled “Implementing the National Voter Registration Act and Chapter 20 of the Texas Election Code,” which you may use to better educate yourself and your employees about the voter registration requirements for public libraries.
Note that each public library must use the official voter registration application form prescribed by the Secretary of State. Orders for pre-addressed voter registration applications must be made through the Secretary of State’s office using this order form.

The 2018 Combined Municipal Campaign is quickly approaching. I would like to share a couple of updates about upcoming events.
Swag items
I should receive Swag items by September 29, 2017, you should receive them by Oct 4, 2017. We will have a Swag Celebration Attire Day.
CMC Agency Fair
2018 “Give A Little Peace” CMC Agency Fair will take place on Wednesday, September 27 from 11am-2pm at Hermann Square Park, across the street from the Central Library.
Agencies will be present to answer your questions about their organizations.
City of Houston Online Auction
If you would like to participate in donating any items to the online City Auction, please email me and have the items to me by Wednesday September 27, 2017.
CMC Coordinator Training

- Monday 10 am - 6 pm

- Thursday 12 pm - 8 pm
- Friday 10 am - 5 pm
- Saturday 10 am - 5 pm
- Sunday Closed

Our schedule shifts will also change slightly for both Walter and Southwest Express:
- 9:15-6:15 Monday-Wednesday

What To Say About Closed Locations

We know that you are getting questions from customers about why some buildings are still closed. Here is some suggested language for you to use as you talk to customers.
Many of our locations have been closed while we assessed them to make sure that they are safe and ready to open. We opened 18 locations on September 5th after the locations were cleared and we had enough available staff to open. We opened 3 additional locations this week and hope to open 3-5 more next week. Other locations did receive some damage from the storm and resulting flood waters so they may take some time before they re-open. We hope to expand hours to include a late night within the next two weeks. Continue to check back with us or on our website for updates on open locations.
Thank you for handling everything out on the frontlines! We appreciate your flexibility and adaptability during this recovery time.

Post-Harvey Updates from LMS - New Items, Floating, Edits, Collection HQ

While HPL is still focusing on Harvey Recovery, LMS has shifted collection management priorities. The following changes are temporary and will be in effect until LMS department managers feel we are ready to resume ‘normal’ services.
New Materials: Open locations will temporarily see an increased volume of new materials arriving from LMS. Many locations remain closed and may be for quite some time. Rather than storing the thousands of new books and other items currently locations would normally receive, we are sending those items to open locations in order to make them available for checkout by our customers. As more locations open, this should start to even out.
Floating: We are extending the ongoing suspension of routine shipments of items from NLs to LMS Float Team through September 29. On a case by case basis, I have made some specific exceptions for locations experiencing a very large influx of returns due to the closure of nearby high-volume libraries. If you find that your unit is besieged by returns that are overwhelming your shelf space, please contact me to discuss a remedy. Hundreds of items that were checked out at closed NLs are being returned at CEN and CMH too and we are floating them out to open units rather than indefinitely storing all those items that are “intransit” back to the NLs where they were checked out.
Edits: For the time being, please hold off sending any edits to LMS except for:
1) Item-on-the-Fly material
2) items specifically recalled by Gary Lackey
3) items on wrong bibliographic records
4) transfers to CEN Stacks
5) items with barcodes not in the system
This means holding onto your call number change requests, label changes, and other problem items until we are able to receive them. (Also, don’t forget that al units should now be using the new LMS flag that was recently distributed and any copies of the old Processing Flag you have on hand should be send to LMS.)
Collection HQ: Please refrain from running any Collection HQ “Dead Items” lists until further notice. “Shopping” for specific items to rebalance collections is also on hold for now. You’ll be notified when it is okay to resume both of those activities.
