Express Shorts, Episode 3

(Note: I used iFilm to edit this video. I should have made the splat louder. I'm sure there will be a next time.)

Because they cared enough to send the very best.

This is likely the last Express Short of the year.

Keep an eye out...

Hello All,
Please keep an eye out for any person that is on a computer that is not in the Windows environment (meaning DOS or especially in the B.I.O.S.). We have had a couple of incidents with patrons changing the power on password in the BIOS and leaving a profane message.

Thanks,
James

After this day...I'll be at Discovery Green

Hey Everyone!

Well...I just saw the Schedule...and...well...after this day TODAY...I'll be at Discovery Green. What does this mean?...I'll still be a Huge Part of HPL Southwest Express Staff and Everything...but I probably won't be here that much more often so it will probably get a lil short staff but a lil depressed.

At this point, I'm Not Going to Say Goodbye, but I will see you all at another time later when i have to make up my hours. Who knows? I will probably still work here when I got back to college so that's a kudos for me and us.

Other than that...You Are All Very Wonderful People and I Love Every Single One of You!

Happy New Years and I will see you all later

I'm not saying good bye yet, but I again I will see you all later!

-Anthony

Peace and Love

Birthdays!

So I've been instructed to post my idea about how to celebrate birthdays here, in hopes of soliciting further opinion. Thus: The person whose birthday was immediately previous is in charge of procuring the cake and card for the next person. What think y'all? Anyone have any better ideas?

Rachel

Canceling Classes

Staff must get approval from management to cancel a class. If management is not available please contact Edward. If one person shows up for a class, the class can NOT be cancelled. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Pandora's Box

So since everyone's listening to Pandora around here anyway, we made a staff account. I think almost everyone knows how to use it, but if you don't, it's fairly straightfoward. You can modify the stations we've already created (more or less by genre)and seed them with new songs or artists, or create new stations for different genres. Pandora's selection of music is fairly prodigious, and it has some pretty esoteric stuff, so give it a shot!

Another Green World

For Your Consideration:

Maybe it's just me, but I suspect that you too might agree. I think that implementations toward a greener workplace is swell idea, and high time!

Here's my initial foray: stale Doritos. If, like me a couple days ago, you tried the ones that occupy some not inconsiderable space in our breakroom cabinet, you almost certainly exclaimed, "YUCK!" Indeed, they have gone irreversibly stale, thus rendering them virtually plasticine, and making our snacks effectively worthless.

Not so fast...

I propose that instead of throwing away the stale Doritos, why not put them to good use? Nay, to green use, if you like. I have discovered that stale Doritos make excellent name badges. Here, I'll grant that they aren't the ideal medium, e. g., I'm not sure we could print our photos on them and the lamination options are limited. But, until Frito Lay makes a square Dorito, don't judge.

What follows is a prototype, which perhaps by definition means it's crude. It's a start, though, an earnest one at that. Ta-Da:

Please, share your ideas.

Technology Classes Project

At our last meeting, Edward expressed the need to have clear objectives and evaluations for all our computer classes. Due to this need to improve our PowerPoint comp class presentations, I’ve been asked by Edward and Thuy to organize a project to modify all presentations. Because of the size of the project (over 20 classes) I’m requesting volunteers to assist in the project.

What does the project entail? I and Wasif have been redefining the objectives of all the Presentations. The objectives, usually at the beginning of the presentation, will now be called: “At the end of this class you should be able to:”

Please email me if you can help, then you will:

1) Receive the presentation through your email as an attachment.
2) Make sure the presentation directly teaches all of the objectives. If
not, you should create more slides or modify them.
3) Save the edited presentation as “New….” (ex: NewGoogle)
4) Create a set of YES/NO questions on a Word document that reflects
the objectives of the presentation and save as “EvalNew…” (ex: EvalNewGoogle)
5) Email the Presentation and the Word doc back to me.

Feel free to ask me if you have any questions.
Thank you for your help,
Aaron

Security Guard

Hi Everyone,

After the accident related to the Wii system, I think we need the security guard to be present in our library more. Therefore, from now on, everyday from 3PM until closing, SMC security guards will be in the library at least 15 minutes each hour. Please cooperate with them to bring the best solution for the safety issue.

In addition, please pay more attention to both library equipment and personal properties. For example, do not leave your personal items visible in your car or park in hidden areas.

Thanks,

Thuy

Your Christmas Music...

I'm looking at YOU, Dionne.

I have several (EDIT: five) tracks of Christmas music, which should be plenty to delight young and old and everyone in-between. If not, please let me know.

Thank You,

Don.

EDIT: Look on your desk. It's called "Dionne's Jackson 5 Christmas Extravaganza." Because that's what it is, an "extravaganza."

HPL Friends MINI GRANTS !!!!!

HPL Express Staff,
Please let me know if you plan on submitting a HPL Friends mini grant proposal. I am strongly encouraging staff to submit a proposal to secure funding for programming. These funds are available and I am certain that you have ideas that are just bubbling in your brain. So make sure that you apply.

Thanks Edward

FYI

The power cord and sensor for the Wii was stored in the comp storage room behind the circ desks...just incase sticky fingers comes back for accesories.

Gift Exchange

Hey All,
We were thinking that it would be fun to have a gift exchange to go with our party. Please let me know if you would like to participate by closing on Wednesday*, so we can make sure everybody gets a name by the weekend. We're setting the limit at $15. When you let me know if you're going to particpate, please include a short list of things you might like so whoever gets your name has some idea where to start. We'll exchange gifts at the party on the 17th.

Rachel

*Yes, I know I'm off on Wednesday, but I'll check my email, etc.

(Just to clarify... If you don't want to particpate, please don't feel obligated to.)

Pot Luck

Hello,
Merry Christmas Everyone!!!!
It's that time of year again to party, party, party. Please join us at Express Southwest for lots of food and fun on Wednesday, December 17 at 11:00. If you are able to attend please bring a dish of food.
Thanks,
Dionne

Look at the money before taking it...

I found a coin from El Salvador in the printing money envelope today...looks like a dime (round, small and silver), but with a 7-sided shape bevel inwards on the coin. Double check the money you get.

Also, can we get a bill marker to check authenticity of larger bills ($10's or $20's)? I know we don't get them often, but I did get a twenty the other day.

Thanks,

Eric

Sandspoint Gate Closed Until Speedbumps Installed in Parking Lot

So children are less likely to get hit by cars trying to cut through the lot, like what happened a month or so ago. Once the speedbumps are installed, the Sandspoint gate will reopen. Until then, use the High Star entrance/exit.
