Report from the field

So this is turning out to be a very busy Saturday, with Express staff all over the place, but we'll make it through all right. I'm sure everyone will have something to say about what they did today, and here's my little part of it:

Thuy and I went out to Sharpstown High School for their "Reach Out to Drop Outs" event. It was fairly small, but I'm given to understand that this is their first year running this event. We took a bunch of library promotional materials, which Thuy has decided to keep together in the red and white cardboard box in the supply room, to use with future outreach events. We'll need to remember to swap out the calenders when necessary, and replace handouts that are running low. We had several people come by and take calenders to post in their offices and classrooms, and a couple of people even asked us to come and do outreach at other locations. Thuy gave them her business card, so hopefully they will remember to follow up with us. We decided we could really use some sort of library banner to put on the front of the table. Bringing the box of trinkets turned out to be a good idea, as there were a few younger kids there. We ended up not giving out any of the music downloads, as pretty much all of the people that came and talked to us were adults. There were quite a few people that thought we were from Walter or Frank, and had no idea that we're here in the Multi Service Center.

The best part of the day was watching the pep rally. Sharpstown has some very skilled students. The band, the drill team, the dance team, the cheerleaders, the football and volleyball teams, and the ROTC all particpated. According to the organizers, they recovered three students that had dropped out.
